There is no calculated window the day depends on. The evening puja is kept in pradosh kaal, the stretch just after sunset, and the lamp at the door goes out as the light goes. Where a household buys something, no text names an hour for it.
Dhanteras is the day the Diwali week starts moving. The shops stay open late, the house gets cleaned, and somewhere in the middle of it, there is a beautiful beginning of puja.
The name is worth saying slowly. Teras is the 13th. Dhan is wealth. The day sits on the thirteenth of Kartik’s dark fortnight, and what has gathered on it are three separate things from three separate places - a lamp, a physician, and a purchase.
The month of Kartik carries its own instruction about lamps: a lamp offered during Kartik is an offering in itself, not a prop for one, and the Kartik Mahatmya is explicit about it. That holds for every evening of the month, and the thirteenth is one of them. It is the one thing on this day that a named text asks for directly.
Then the physician.
When the devas and asuras churned the ocean, a figure rose out of it carrying a vessel, and the Bhagavata Purana names him: Dhanvantari, a portion of a portion of Vishnu, the one who sees Ayurveda. The vessel held amrita. He is the reason the day is associated with health, with medicine, and with the idea that what comes out of the ocean is worth more than what is bought.
Here is the part that almost every account of this day gets wrong, and it is worth being precise about. The emergence is in the Puranas. The DATE is not. No text we can find that places Dhanvantari’s appearance on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. The observance of Dhanvantari Jayanti on this tithi is a tradition - widely kept, sincerely kept, and not prescription. The event is scriptural; the calendar placement is ours.
And then there is the third thing - buying something.
Metal, utensils, a small piece of gold or silver is named in no text at all. It is not that the texts forbid it. It is that they do not know about it. It is a trade custom that grew into an observance, and it grew quickly enough that many people now take it to be the oldest part of the day rather than the newest.
All three are real, and people keep all three. It is worth knowing which is which.

“Om Vishnu, Vishnu, Vishnu. Today, in the second half of Brahma’s day, in the Shveta-Varaha kalpa, in the Vaivasvata manvantara, in the twenty-eighth Kali Yuga, in its first quarter, on the continent of Jambudvipa, in the land of Bharata — in the holy place of [place] — in the year named [samvatsara], in the [ayana], in the [season], in the month of [month], in the [fortnight], on the [tithi], on [weekday] — I, born of the [gotra] lineage, named [name] — with the clearing of accumulated fault and for the settling of all misfortune — shall perform the worship of [the vrat or the deity].”

If you are buying something today, buy it in the day and without hurry.
In the evening, set the puja space
a clean cloth, a lamp, water, akshat, flowers, dhoop and naivedya
Honour Dhanvantari
offer the water, the flowers, the dhoop and the naivedya, and say the invocation
Lakshmi puja in pradosh kaal, the stretch just after sunset
The Shri Sukta is the invocation where a household keeps one.
After sunset, carry a lamp to the main door and set it down facing south.
This is the Yama Deepam, and it is the oldest observance on the day.
Light the lamps — at the door, at the tulsi, around the house.
If you give anything today, give it now.
The mantra
ओम नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय:
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
"I bow to the Lord who resides in all hearts" or "Salutations to the Supreme Lord, Vasudeva (Vishnu/Krishna).""
Japa count: 108 · also kept at 11, 21, 51
No mandatory fast
This observance is celebratory. Nothing in the tradition asks you to go without food for it.
Vrat Katha — the sacred story
Frame
The story of this day is not a story about money. It is the story of where the physician came from, and it is told because he came out of it carrying a vessel.
Phala-shruti
What the story holds out is the order of it. The poison came before the nectar, and the nectar came last, and nothing in the sequence could be skipped or hurried. Whoever keeps this day is not being promised a return on an outlay. They are being told that the thing worth having came up at the end of a long effort, and that the vessel it arrived in was carried by a physician, which is to say that what the ocean finally gave up was health.
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.

Myth: “You must buy gold on Dhanteras or the year brings loss”
Fact: No text names a purchase on this day, not the Kartik Mahatmya, not the Bhagavata, not any of them. The observance named for the thirteenth of Kartik is a lamp. Buy something if you want to and can; nothing about the puja changes either way.
Myth: “Thirteen means thirteenfold returns”
Fact: Teras is the thirteenth tithi of the fortnight, in the same way chauth is the fourth. It is a position in the calendar. No text connects the number to a return of any size.
Myth: “Dhanteras is National Ayurveda Day”
Fact: It was, from 2016. In 2025 the Ayush Ministry notified a fixed date of 23 September instead, on the stated ground that Dhanteras moves across mid-October to mid-November and makes national observances hard to schedule. Dhanvantari Jayanti and Ayurveda Day are now two different days.
The day is named after the thirteenth. What gathered on it, over a very long time, was a lamp, a physician and a purchase. The lamp and the physician are in the texts; the purchase is not. If all you do today is clean the house, light a lamp, and put one at the door facing south, you have kept Dhanteras completely, and you have kept the oldest part of it.
