This the night
Kartik Amavasya is the darkest night of the year, and the tradition chose it for the goddess of light. Not despite the dark — because of it. On a full moon, a diya is a decoration. Tonight it is the only light there is.
The tradition did not put Lakshmi on a bright night by oversight. Kartik Amavasya is the darkest night of the year, and it was chosen.
Two narratives converge on it. The Padma Purana places Lakshmi's emergence at the churning of the ocean - the same event that produced Dhanvantari, worshipped two days earlier on Dhanteras and describes her entering, on this tithi, the homes that welcome her with light and cleanliness.
The Skanda Purana places Rama's return to Ayodhya on the same night, with the city lighting rows of lamps along every street. Deepavali means exactly that: a row of lamps. “This narrative belongs primarily to Valmiki’s Ramayana rather than the Skanda Purana”
Two texts, two narratives, one tithi. That convergence is what makes the date deliberate rather than incidental - a coincidence would have produced one story, not two arriving at the same night from opposite directions.
A sankalp is a stated intention, not a formula that must be pronounced correctly. It names who is doing it, when, where, and for what.
Say this — or your own words
Spoken with water in the right hand, then poured out
“I (your name) from (gotra) perform the Lakshmi Puja on (date) at (place) for (purpose) for the pleasure of Sri Mahalakshmi.”
WHO
Your name, and your gotra if your family uses one. Where the household performs it together, the person leading the puja is named.
WHEN AND WHERE
Kartik Amavasya, in Pradosh Kaal, at home. The place matters here more than in most rituals — the katha is about a goddess entering a house, so the house is named.
FOR WHAT
The wellbeing of the household. Not a sum, not a target, and not a year's earnings. That last line is deliberate. This is the article most likely to attract an outcome promise, and the sankalp is where one would enter if it entered anywhere. The tradition asks you to state an intention, not to place an order. The Padma and Skanda Puranas prescribe the observance, the tithi, and the timing. Neither gives sankalp wording. The standard puja sankalp with this observance named is paddhati convention rather than scriptural instruction.
Listen to the sankalp · EN
Ten steps. Step one is the sankalp. Steps three onward run inside Pradosh Kaal.
Take the sankalp
Take the sankalp before the altar, at the start of Pradosh Kaal, before the Ganesh puja begins.
Morning of Diwali
Wash the entrance. Draw the rangoli. Set out every diya you intend to light.
Noon of Diwali
Set the altar. Red cloth on the chowki, Lakshmi and Ganesha placed with Lakshmi to Ganesha's right, kalash, akshat, kumkum, new cloth for the deities.
Dusk of Diwali
At the start of Pradosh Kaal, begin. Ganesh puja first & always, then Maa Lakshmi.
Dress & Adorn
Panchamrit abhishek. Dress the idol. Offer lotus, tulsi, kumkum, akshat, sweets, and new coins or notes.
Mantra
Chant the Mahalakshmi mantra. Refer to Mantra section.
Aarti, camphor, bell
Peform aarti with kapoor/camphor. We use camphor because its complete burning symbolizes ego surrender, while its bright flame and clean aroma represent purity, wealth attraction, and the removal of negativity
Light Diyas
Light up every room, every corner, every doorstep and window ledge with diyas. The row of lamps is the ritual act, not the decoration around it.
Welcome Maa Lakshmi
Leave the doors and windows open
Distribute Prasad
Distribute sweets and spend quality time with loved ones.
The mantra
ओं श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
"I bow and offer salutations to the great Goddess Lakshmi, the bringer of abundance, wealth, and spiritual prosperity"
Japa count: 108 · also kept at 11, 21, 51
The exact formulation "ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः" as a single standalone phrase does not belong to a single, monolithic ancient book like a story or a specific chapter. Instead, its components and its exact structure are documented across various classes of post-Vedic scriptures.
Diwali carries no fast
No mandatory fast
This observance is celebratory. Nothing in the tradition asks you to go without food for it.
Diwali Mahalakshmi Pujan Katha
Samudra Manthan - Vishnu Purana; Bhagavata Purana; Padma Purana.
When fortune went out of the three worlds
There was a time when fortune went out of the three worlds. The devas had been careless with a boon, and what followed was not punishment so much as consequence - their vigour went, their splendour went, and Lakshmi herself withdrew from the worlds and was not in them any longer. The asuras pressed them, and the devas, who had never had to ask for anything, had nothing left to fight with. They went to Vishnu. And what he told them to do was strange: that the ocean of milk had to be churned, and that they could not do it alone. They would have to ask the asuras to help, and they would have to promise to share what came up. So it was done. Mandara the mountain was laid on its side for the churning staff and Vasuki the serpent wound round it for the rope, the devas at one end and the asuras at the other, and when the mountain began to sink Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and held it up from beneath. They churned for a very long time. What came up first was not treasure. It was Halahala - the poison, enough of it to end everything and it was Shiva who drank it and held it in his throat, and his throat turned blue and stayed blue.
Why it matters: The house is cleaned and the lamps are lit because of what the story says about her: she had gone, she came back, and she chose where to settle.

Myth: “If you miss the exact muhurat, Lakshmi will not come.”
Fact: The muhurat is the ideal window, not a door that closes. A puja performed with attention during Pradosh Kaal on Amavasya is complete. Ten minutes late is ten minutes late — it is not a failed ritual, and treating the clock as the point turns the most joyful night of the year into anxiety.
Myth: “If you fall asleep, she leaves.”
Fact: Staying awake is described as an act of devotion, not as a condition of her arrival. Households with small children, night shifts and elderly relatives have kept this festival for centuries. Sleep when you need to.
