Ahoi Ashtami falls three days after Karva Chauth, and the two are constantly confused. They are not the same vrat and they are not versions of each other.
Different deity - Ahoi Mata, not Karva or Parvati. Different katha. Different reason - children, not a husband. And a different trigger for breaking the fast, which is the clearest way to tell them apart: Karva Chauth ends at moonrise, Ahoi Ashtami ends when the first star appears.
Ahoi Mata is a folk form of the Mother - drawn on a wall rather than sculpted and the katha is carried orally. An attribution to the Bhavishya Purana circulates widely and we have not been able to give you a chapter for it. Until we can, we will not claim it.
Most vrats in the Kartik fortnight are directed outward or upward: toward a husband, toward a deity, toward a season turning. This one is directed at the thing a mother is already thinking about, and it does not ask her to reframe that worry as devotion. It gives the worry a day, a figure to bring it to, and a signal in the sky that tells her when it is over.
The figure is Ahoi Mata, a folk form of the Mother - drawn on a wall in ochre and red rather than sculpted, made fresh each year and left to weather. That she is drawn rather than carved is the clearest marker of where this observance comes from. It belongs to households and to the women in them, not to temples.

Listen to the sankalp · EN
Take the sankalp
Take the sankalp after bathing, before the drawn image of Ahoi Mata
Bathe in the morning.
Draw or place an image of Ahoi Mata on a wall or a cloth.
Evening Pujan
In the evening, offer water, akshat and flowers before the image.
Katha
Listen to the Ahoi Ashtami katha, traditionally narrated by an elder woman of the house
Watch for the first star of the evening.
Sighting a star breaks the fast - not the moon.
If it's a cloudy night
If the sky is overcast and no star is visible, households wait for moonrise instead
Offer water to the star, then eat.
Feed the children first.
The mantra
ॐ अहोई माता नमो नमः
Om Ahoi Mata Namo Namah
""Om, I bow down and offer salutations to the Divine Mother Ahoi.""
Japa count: 108 · also kept at 11, 21, 51
From sunrise until the first star is sighted.
No mandatory fast
This observance is celebratory. Nothing in the tradition asks you to go without food for it.
Narrated in the evening, before the star is watched for.
Vrat Katha — the sacred story
Frame
It is narrated in the evening, before the star is watched for, and traditionally by an elder woman of the house rather than read privately.
Phala-Shruti
What the katha holds out is not a mother buying off a debt. It is the tradition’s response to accidental harm - no condemnation, and a practice to hold on to. The woman is not told she is wicked. She is told what to do next, and she is told it every year for the rest of her life, which is the part worth noticing. What is promised to whoever keeps the day is not protection bought with hunger. It is the same thing the elders gave her: somewhere to put the fear.
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.
