WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE TODAY?
WHAT COUNTS AS A GRAIN
The rule is about grains and pulses — and several Ekadashi foods are neither
Kuttu is a seed. Singhara is a water chestnut. Sabudana is palm starch. Samak is a millet the tradition classifies separately. The answer is the same wherever you meet it, on any Ekadashi guide.

Dhanteras falls the next day, 6 November, once Dwadashi ends at 08:48 and Trayodashi begins. Diwali is Sunday 8 November. This Ekadashi is the last quiet day before the week.
Rama Ekadashi is not named for Rama of the Ramayana. It is the Ekadashi of Kartik’s dark fortnight, and it falls the day before Dhanteras opens the week of lights.
The Padma Purana gives this day its own chapter. Krishna is answering Yudhishthira, and what he describes is not a private discipline but a house: in King Muchukunda’s kingdom, on Vishnu’s day, nobody eats. The daughter of that house, Chandrabhaga, had kept the fast since she was eight years old because that was simply what the household did.
The chapter calls the day Rama. It does not say why. Rama is one of the names of Lakshmi in the standard name-lists, and the day sits immediately before the fortnight in which she is worshipped more than at any other point in the year, which is where the connection most people make comes from. The connection is reasonable. It is not something this chapter states, and we mark it as our reading rather than as scripture.
What the chapter does state is the placement itself, and the placement is worth sitting with. A fast in the dark fortnight, the day before the week of lights begins. The narrative recited during the observance is at Katha section.
The Padma Purana prescribes the vrat, the fast and the katha. It does not give sankalp wording. The form below is the standard vrat sankalp with this Ekadashi named, which is paddhati convention.
Say this — or your own words
Spoken with water in the right hand, then poured out
oṃ viṣṇur viṣṇur viṣṇuḥ || mamātmanaḥ śruti-smṛti-purāṇokta-phala-prāptyarthaṃ śrī viṣṇu prītyarthaṃ ramā ekādaśī vrataṃ kariṣye ||

The fast runs from the Dashami evening to the Parana on Dwadashi morning.
Dashami - the day before
One sattvic meal before noon. Grains, onion and garlic are left off from midday onward.
Ekadashi - the fast day
Left off: grains, rice, wheat, lentils and pulses, regular salt, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Sendha namak is used instead of table salt. Phalahar only.
Dwadashi - the Parana
Break the fast inside the Parana window, after Hari Vasara ends. Water first, then fruit, then the meal.
Vrat Katha — the sacred story
King Muchukunda was a devotee of Vishnu, and in his kingdom the Ekadashi fast was kept by the whole household. His daughter Chandrabhaga had kept it since she was eight. She was married to Shobhana, the son of King Chandrasena. When Shobhana came to the palace and the Ekadashi arrived, Chandrabhaga told him plainly how it was in her father’s house: on Vishnu’s day nobody eats. She asked him to be resolute. He resolved to keep it, and he was not strong. Through the night the household kept vigil and worshipped Vishnu while he suffered with hunger, and at sunrise, the fast completed, he died. Chandrabhaga did not die with him. She performed his funeral rites and stayed in her father’s house. Shobhana, by the power of the Rama vow, reached a divine city on Mount Mandara, where the gandharvas sang his praise. A brahmana named Somasharman came through that city on pilgrimage and recognised him. Shobhana told him the city had come from the Ekadashi fast — and that it was unstable, because he had kept the vow without faith. He asked Somasharman to carry word to Chandrabhaga. She asked to be taken to him. At the hermitage of the sage Vamadeva, near Mount Mandara, Vamadeva sprinkled her with water while reciting the Vedic hymns, and by that and by her own vow she became able to go. She came to Shobhana and told him she had kept the Ekadashi with faith since she was eight years old. By the merit of that keeping, the city would stand until the final deluge. Krishna ends by saying that the Ekadashis of both fortnights are to be kept equally, and that whoever hears the importance of these vows is freed of all sins.
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.

Scored out of five on how directly the text states it
Cultural, not text
Scored out of five on how widely it is attested — real and valid, and not scripture
Myth: ““Rama Ekadashi is named for Rama of the Ramayana.””
Fact: Rama is a name of Lakshmi, and the day falls the day before the week in which she is worshipped. The Padma Purana chapter names the day without glossing it, so the connection is a reading rather than a statement of the text but it is not Rama of the Ramayana.
Myth: ““It must be nirjala or it does not count.””
Fact: No text prescribes the waterless form. Phalahar is the most widely kept and is fully accepted. A fast adapted to your health is a complete vrat.
Myth: ““Missing the Parana window destroys the merit.””
Fact: The framing is propriety, not invalidation by honest circumstance. Break the fast as close to the window as you can.
The day before the week of lights begins, the calendar has a fast in it.
The chapter that gives us this day spends its length on a household where the fast was simply what everyone did, and on a man who kept it once, completely, and was given something that would not stand. What made it stand was someone else’s twenty years of ordinary keeping.
