WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE TODAY?
WHAT COUNTS AS A GRAIN
The rule is about grains and pulses — and several Ekadashi foods are neither
Kuttu is a seed. Singhara is a water chestnut. Sabudana is palm starch. Samak is a millet the tradition classifies separately. The answer is the same wherever you meet it, on any Ekadashi guide.

Meaning Behind Name
An ankusha is the hooked goad a mahout uses to guide an elephant - a small instrument against an animal many times stronger, working by direction rather than by force.
Papankusha means the goad applied to papa. The image the name carries is not of punishment but of course correction: something enormous, moving under its own momentum, turned by a light touch applied at the right moment
The name is the whole of it. Paap is wrongdoing; an ankusha is the hooked goad a mahout uses to guide an elephant.
A goad is small, and an elephant is not. It does not overpower the animal and could not , it works because a light touch, applied early, by someone the animal trusts, changes where several tonnes of momentum ends up. Nothing about it is punitive.
The Padma Purana places the Ekadashi in the bright fortnight of Ashwin and has Krishna describe it to Yudhishthira as carrying particular merit for those who have done wrong and wish to turn. The emphasis in the text is on the possibility of turning rather than on the wrongdoing itself.
Why that matters is what the day is guarding against in both directions. A tradition that meant this fast as a reset button - wrong on Monday, fast on Tuesday, clean by Wednesday would not have named it after an instrument of course correction. And a tradition that meant it as punishment would not have chosen an instrument that works by trust.
It sits two days after Vijayadashami, which is the day a long fight ends. This is the day after the celebration, when the question is what you do next

Padma Purana, Uttar Khanda Chapter 59
A hunter at the end of his life was given one day to keep
1. In the Vindhya mountains lived a hunter named Krodhana - the wrathful one. He killed, robbed, drank and lied, and he did it for the whole length of his life, not one bad season of it.
A messenger of Yama came to him and told him the day of his death was fixed, and near.
He was not sorry. He was frightened. He ran to the ashram of the sage Angira and asked for a way out. Angira set him no penance, no austerity, no pilgrimage, only the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Ashwin, kept with devotion to Vishnu.
He kept it. At his death he was taken not to Yama’s court but to the feet of Vishnu.
Why it matters: The Purana passage is a vrata mahatmya in three parts: the frame - Krishna telling Yudhishthira, then the Krodhana narrative, then a closing statement of merit. Popular retellings usually soften Krodhana into a man who repents. The text does not: he is frightened, not sorry, and that is the point of the story; the turn is offered to someone who has not earned it.
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.

Cultural, not text
Scored out of five on how widely it is attested — real and valid, and not scripture
Myth: “The fast erases sins, so you can do as you like and observe the Ekadashi afterwards”
Fact: The goad in the name guides an elephant away from the direction it was heading. A tradition that meant the fast to be a reset button would not have chosen an instrument of course correction as its name
Myth: “It must be nirjala or it does not count ”
Fact: No text prescribes the waterless form. Phalahar is the most widely kept and is fully accepted. A fast adapted to your health, kept sincerely, is a complete vrat
Myth: “Missing the Parana window destroys the merit”
Fact: The framing is propriety, not invalidation by honest circumstance. Break the fast as close to the window as you can and do not let the clock become the point of the day
An ankusha does not overpower an elephant. It could not. It works because a small correction applied early, by someone the animal trusts, changes where several tonnes of momentum ends up. That is what the day is named for
