Core Practice
The householder havan is offerings into consecrated fire with mantra and swaaha
This guide: 1 core practice · 4 scriptural elements · 5 regional customs · 3 corrections
A havan may be performed on any day. It is commonly done at Griha Pravesh, Purnima, on a birthday or anniversary, at the start of Navratri and at its conclusion, on Vasant Panchami, before an examination or a new venture, alongside another Anushthan like Satyanarayan Katha, Sundarkand Paath and in many households on the first morning of the month.
It has a reputation for being difficult, something that requires a pandit, a proper kund, a full morning and a list of materials nobody has. Some of that is true of a large yajna. Almost none of it is true of the domestic havan, which the Grihya Sutras actually describe as what was designed from the beginning to be performed by a householder in a house.
This guide is that version. One person or a family, a thali of sand if there is no kund, mango wood if you have it and any clean dry wood if you do not, and about forty minutes.
A havan is the oldest thing anyone in this tradition does. Before temples, before murtis, before almost any of the practices a modern Hindu household would recognise, there was a fire, a set of offerings, and a word said as each one was released.
Say this — or your own words
Spoken with water in the right hand, then poured out
ओम विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः … मम आत्मनः श्रुतिस्मृतिपुराणोक्तफलप्राप्त्यर्थं हवनं करिष्ये।
“I (your name) from (gotra) take up the havan on (date) at (place) for (purpose).”
WHO
Your name, and your gotra if your family uses one. If nobody in your family remembers the gotra, say the family name. A forgotten gotra does not break a havan.
WHEN AND WHERE
The date and the place - the new premises, the house you are or about to move into.
FOR WHAT
The reason. A havan is performed both as nitya karma, simply because it is the day, and as kamya karma, for a stated desire. Both are legitimate and the sankalp is where you say which one this is.
Listen to the sankalp · EN
Eleven steps. Step one is the sankalp. Steps two and eleven are the ones people skip, and they are the two that matter for safety. No priest is required. The Grihya Sutras describe this as the householder’s own rite, performed by the householder.
Take the sankalp
Your name, your gotra, the date, the place and the purpose.
Prepare the space
Open a window. Place the kund or the sand-filled thali on a floor or a stone surface, never on wood, cloth or a dining table. Clear anything hanging above it. Keep the lota of water within reach and keep it there until the end.
Perform achaman
Bathe, wear clean clothes, and sit facing east or north. Perform achaman - three sips of water from the palm.
Ganesh Pujan
Ganesh puja first, as in any rite. A few words, akshat and a flower are sufficient.
Setup Wood
Lay the wood in a criss-cross in the kund with the dung cakes beneath. Light the camphor and establish the fire. Wait until it is burning steadily before offering anything.
Offer with the Gayatri mantra
A spoon of ghee and a pinch of samagri at each svaha. Twenty-seven offerings is a common household count and 108 is the fuller one; any number you can complete with attention is correct.
Offer to the deity of the occasion if there is one
Navratri, Griha Pravesh, a birthday, Satyanarayanwith that deity’s mantra, in the same rhythm.
Purnaahuti
the full and final offering. The coconut, betel, supari and dried fruits, offered together with a last spoon of ghee. This closes the havan.
Aarti
Take the warmth of the fire after aarti to your eyes with your palms, as is done.
Let the fire go out.
Do not leave the room while anything is still burning. When only embers remain, sprinkle water from the lota until there is no heat. The bhasma may be kept and applied; the remains are disposed of in a garden, in soil, or in flowing water, not in household waste.
The mantra
ओम भूर्भुवः स्वः । तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् । स्वाहा ॥
Om bhur bhuvah svah · tat savitur varenyam · bhargo devasya dhimahi · dhiyo yo nah prachodayat · svaha
"We meditate upon that supreme, adorable, and self-luminous divine light of the Creator (the solar deity). May that divine light illuminate and guide our intellect toward the right path. With total devotion and surrender, we offer ourselves to this cosmic truth."
The Gayatri Mantra is the standard mantra of the household havan and needs no initiation to be used in this way. Swaaha is said as the ghee leaves the spoon, not before and not after. The word and the release are one action. Up to swaaha the offering is still yours. Japa count - no named text requires a count for the offering to be valid.
No mandatory fast
This observance is celebratory. Nothing in the tradition asks you to go without food for it.

Myth: “Havan smoke purifies the air and kills germs - it is scientifically proven and it is Vedic.”
Fact: It is not Vedic. No Vedic text makes any claim about the physical effect of homa smoke on air or on illness. What circulates is a modern argument wearing the authority of a text that says nothing of the kind. We are not in a position to adjudicate the science and we are in a position to say the tradition never made the claim. A havan is an offering, not a fumigation. If anything in the house has a respiratory condition, ventilate properly or do not perform it indoors at all.
Myth: “You need a pandit or the havan is invalid.”
Fact: The Grihya Sutras describe these as the householder’s rites, performed by the householder. A purohit is engaged for scale, for occasions with a complex sequence, or because a family prefers it - all good reasons, none of them a validity requirement. A person alone with a thali of sand and the Gayatri is performing a havan.
Myth: “If the fire goes out partway, or you have to stop, something bad follows.”
Fact: No named text says this. A fire that goes out is relit. A havan interrupted because a child needed attention or the smoke alarm went off is resumed or concluded, and nothing is incurred. The idea that an interrupted rite rebounds on the performer is a fear attached to the practice from outside it, and it is the single most reliable way to make people pay someone else to do something they could do themselves.
Almost everything else in this tradition arrived later. The temple, the murti, the pilgrimage, the printed katha, the calendar of festivals that this website is largely made of - all of it came after.
What was there first was somebody sitting on the ground in front of a small fire, putting ghee into it, and saying a word that meant this is no longer mine.
You can do that on a Tuesday morning in a flat, with a steel thali and a window open. It is the same rite. Nothing has been lost from it.
