Navratri means nine nights. It is not nine separate festivals - it is one continuous arc of worship, moving from darkness through fire to light
The Devi Mahatmya tells the story of a time when the gods were losing. Mahishasura had taken heaven, and no god could defeat him. The collective energy of the gods converged into one form: Durga. She fought Mahishasura through nine nights, and on the tenth day, she prevailed.
Every year, tradition gives this story a ritual form.
At the beginning of Navratri, a kalash is established and jau is sown. The seeds are left to germinate through the nine days - a small act of planting and waiting, as life begins to emerge from the earth.
A flame is kept lit. The Mother is worshipped in her different forms through the days. And as the jau grows, the ritual itself becomes a reminder: Shakti is not only invoked - it is nurtured, and it unfolds.
Then comes the tenth day, when the arc reaches its culmination, and the victory of good over Mahishasura is marked.

Partial fast
Phalahar on Pratipada, Ashtami, and Navami only, eating sattvic on the other days
Phalahar
Fast on the irst and last on day one and day nine only
Read across the nine nights, not in one sitting
Durga Saptashati, Devi Mahatmya, Markandeya Purana
The Navratri katha is the Durga Saptashati, the seven hundred verses of the Devi Mahatmya, from the Markandeya Purana. It is recited across the nine nights rather than read through at once. The reading follows the fight rather than summarising it, which is why the observance runs nine nights rather than one. Households that cannot recite the full text read Chapter 1 on the first night and continue as the days allow
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.
Named in text
Devi Bhagavata Purana, Durga Saptashati
Scored out of five on how directly the text states it
Cultural, not text
Scored out of five on how widely it is attested — real and valid, and not scripture
Myth: “If the Akhand Jyoti goes out, the whole Navratri is wasted”
Fact: Relight it and continue. An accidental extinguishing does not cancel the days already kept. This fear contradicts the Devi’s own teaching she fights for you, not against you
Myth: “Wearing the wrong colour on a day brings bad luck”
Fact: The daily colour system is custom, not scripture. No named text assigns colours to days. If you wear green on a red day, nothing is owed and nothing is lost
Myth: “Kanya Pujan must be exactly nine girls fewer is disrespectful”
Fact: Nine is the ideal, matching the nine forms. Two, five and seven are all accepted across traditions. The practice is the honouring, not the headcount

Day 4 – 14 Oct: Kushmanda, she who made the universe with her smile; offering: malpua; mantra: ॐ ह्रीं कूष्माण्डायै नमः.
Day 5 – 15 Oct: Skandamata, mother of Skanda and the warrior goddess as mother; offering: banana; mantra: ॐ ह्रीं स्कन्दमातायै नमः.
Day 6 – 16 Oct: Katyayani, the fierce form created to destroy Mahishasura; offering: honey; mantra: ॐ ह्रीं कात्यायन्यै नमः.
Day 7 – 17 Oct: Kaalratri, the dark night itself and the slayer of Raktabija; offering: jaggery; mantra: ॐ ह्रीं कालरात्र्यै नमः.

Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami
These are the most intensive days of the nine. In 2026, the two tithis merge on 19 October, so confirm your panchang before fixing the day.
Havan is traditionally performed on Ashtami. Kanya Pujan inviting young girls and honouring them as living forms of the Devi is kept on Ashtami or Navami according to family tradition. Their feet are washed, food is offered, and blessings are taken from them
Where Ashtami and Navami cross, Sandhi Puja is performed in the window spanning the join
