Kept on Dwadashi in many households, on Ekadashi in Saurashtra where the barat sets out, and across three days from Ekadashi to Trayodashi in parts of Bihar. If your family keeps a different day in this window, keep yours.
The bride is a plant. The groom is a stone.
Tulsi stands in her pot in a bridal chunri, with a paper face, a bindi and and bangles set around the base. Four sugarcane sticks make the mandap. The Shaligram is placed beside her, wrapped in cloth. Mantras are said. A thread joins them. Rice and vermillion come down over both.
And until this wedding is done, the season has not opened. Every wedding in our families this winter waits behind this one.
Tulsi Vivah exists because of a debt, and our texts are unusually plain about whose it is.
Vrinda was deceived by a god who came to her in her husband's form. She cursed him for it. He accepted the curse. What followed was not an apology, it was a standing arrangement. Once a year, in the open, he marries her.
That is why this is a ceremony and not a remembrance. A remembrance looks back at something. A wedding is performed, and performing it every year is the form the restitution takes.
Where it sits in the calendar is the other half of it. Chaturmas closes the day before and the season opens, but not until this wedding has happened. A tradition that thought the debt settled would not keep putting her first in the queue.
The Vrinda narrative is in our Puranas. Sankalp wording for this ceremony is not - the form below is the standard vivah sankalp with this marriage named, which is paddhati convention.
Say this — or your own words
Spoken with water in the right hand, then poured out
oṃ viṣṇur viṣṇur viṣṇuḥ || mamātmanaḥ śruti-smṛti-purāṇokta-phala-prāptyarthaṃ śrī tulasī śāligrāma prītyarthaṃ tulasī vivāhaṃ kariṣye ||
“A sankalp is a stated intention. It names who is doing it, when, where and for what.”
WHO
The person officiating, by name and gotra if the family uses one. In a human vivah this is the one giving the bride away, and the ceremony borrows the role along with the sequence. Anyone may take it.
WHEN AND WHERE
Kartik Shukla Dwadashi, in the courtyard or wherever the tulsi stands.
FOR WHAT
The marriage itself. Where the household holds the kanyadaan merit, name it.
Listen to the sankalp · EN
Take the sankalp
Take the sankalp before the tulsi pot, at the start.
Build the mandap around the pot
Place four sugarcane sticks, a marigold garland, mango leaves.
Dress Tulsi as the bride
Red chunri, paper face with bindi and nose ring, sindoor, bangles around the pot.
Prepare the Shaligram
Or a Krishna or Vishnu murti, as the groom, bathed and wrapped in cloth, and place him beside her. Apply haldi to both.
The Ritual
Tie the thread joining the pot and the Shaligram.
Officiating the wedding
Say the wedding mantras and perform the aarti. An elder of the family can officiate; a pandit is not required. Shower roli chawal over the couple.
Offering
Offer sweets, fruit and paan-supari, then take the prasad round.

Vrat Katha — the sacred story
Vrinda was married to Jalandhar, an asura of great power. Her devotion to Vishnu was complete and her conduct as a wife unbroken, and it formed a shield around her husband. While it held, no god could defeat him. The gods went to Vishnu. He came to Vrinda in Jalandhar's form. Believing her husband had returned, she received him, and her vow was broken without her knowing. The shield fell, and Jalandhar was killed. When she understood what had been done, she cursed Vishnu: you acted with a heart of stone, so become one. He accepted it, and became the Shaligram. She went to her husband's pyre, and from her ashes a plant grew. Vishnu declared that this plant would be the most sacred of all, that no worship of his would be complete without her leaf, and that once every year he would marry her - Shaligram to Tulsi, for what he owed.
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.

Myth: “"Tulsi Vivah is charming folklore, not really scriptural."”
Fact: The Vrinda narrative is Puranic and told at length. Her devotion, the deception, the curse, and the plant that grew from her ashes. The ceremony our families hold is how that story is kept, year after year, and it opens the wedding season for everyone. It is not a footnote.
Myth: “"Only married women may perform Tulsi Vivah."”
Fact: Anyone may. Nothing in the texts restricts who performs it, and a pandit is not required either - an elder of the family can officiate. In practice the ceremony is often led by the women of the house, and in many places a couple without children takes the role of Tulsi's parents. Those are customs worth knowing, and none of them is a rule shutting anyone out.
Myth: “"The Puranas fix Tulsi Vivah to Kartik Shukla Dwadashi."”
Fact: It is kept anywhere from Prabodhini Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima, and the day varies by region - Dwadashi in many households, Ekadashi in Saurashtra where the barat sets out, three days from Ekadashi to Trayodashi in parts of Bihar. We publish Dwadashi for Delhi-NCR. If your family keeps a different day inside that window, keep yours.
