CORE PRACTICE
Chitragupta as the keeper of the record of every being’s deeds in Yama’s court.

The amavasya ending around 12:31 pm on 9 November pushes pratipada to the 10th and dwitiya to the 11th. Also this tithi, Bhai Dooj, and Yama Dwitiya. Many households keep both in the same afternoon.
On most days a pen is a thing you use. On this one it is set down, cleaned, and worshipped, along with the inkpot and the ledger it writes in. The day belongs to the figure whose whole office is writing things down.
Yama, who receives every being after death, came before Brahma with the weight of what He had been given. The lives were without number, and the deeds within each life beyond counting. No one, He said, could hold such a record alone.
Brahma entered meditation, and remained there long. From that meditation a figure arose bearing a pen and an inkpot, and Brahma gave Him the name Chitragupta - chit, for the consciousness He arose from, and gupta, for what lies hidden within it. To Him was given the record of every being’s deeds, and from that record Yama’s court would judge.
The same account gives the Kayastha community its descent. Brahma declared that the progeny of Chitragupta would be called Kayastha, from kaya, His own body. That is what the text sets down, and we set it down here as the text gives it.
What this day honours is the keeping of the record itself. Everything is written - not only what we would rather went unrecorded, but everything: what no one witnessed, and what no one thanked us for. A record that complete is what makes the reckoning just. Nothing is missed, nothing is counted twice, nothing is quietly forgotten in anyone’s favour. And so once a year the pen, the inkpot and the ledger are set down before the household, and the household sits before them.
Chitragupta reaches us through scripture - He is in the Garuda Purana, in the Mahabharata and in the Padma Purana. The puja on this tithi reaches us another way. We have not found it set down in any text, and it has been kept regardless, year upon year, in the homes that keep it. The figure is written. The day is carried.
A sankalp is a stated intention - it names who is doing it, when, where and for what.
Say this — or your own words
Spoken with water in the right hand, then poured out
oṃ viṣṇur viṣṇur viṣṇuḥ · mamātmanaḥ śruti-smṛti-purāṇokta-phala-prāptyarthaṃ, śrī citragupta prītyarthaṃ citragupta pūjanaṃ kariṣye
“I (your name) from (gotra) perform the Chitragupta puja on (date) at (place), for the pleasure of Shri Chitragupta.”
WHO
Your name, and your gotra if your family uses one.
WHEN AND WHERE
Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, at home, in the afternoon before the pens and the ledger.
FOR WHAT
The year’s work and the household’s record. Where the puja is kept for a business, the business is named.
Listen to the sankalp · EN
Take the sankalp
Take the sankalp in the afternoon, before the puja begins.
Getting ready
Clean the pens, the inkpot and the account books, and set them on a cloth before the puja space.
Pujan
Place an image or symbol of Chitragupta, and light a diya.
The Ritual
On a fresh sheet of paper, draw a swastik with roli and ghee. On the same sheet, write your name and address, and a record of the year’s income and expenditure.
Offering
Offer sweets, fruit and incense before the image, and place the written sheet with them.
The mantra
ॐ श्री चित्रगुप्ताय नमः
oṃ śrī citraguptāya namaḥ
"Om, salutations to Shri Chitragupta."
Said before the image as the offering is made, and again as the written sheet is placed.
No mandatory fast
This observance is celebratory. Nothing in the tradition asks you to go without food for it.
Told during the puja, before the sheet is written.
Vrat Katha — the sacred story
Frame
Told during the puja, before the sheet is written.
Phala-shruti
What the story offers is not a warning. It is the fact of the record itself that what is done is written down, by someone whose entire office is accuracy, and that the writing includes everything and not only the parts anyone would want examined. The pens on the cloth are the instruments of that. Once a year they are cleaned and attended to rather than used.
Recite the katha during the puja. Read it aloud or have it read while you listen.

Myth: “Chitragupta is a Vedic deity”
Fact: The texts that describe him are Puranic and Epic - the Garuda Purana, the Mahabharata, the Padma Purana. A Rig Veda verse about a greatest king among lesser kings is sometimes read as referring to him; it does not name him, and the reading is applied backwards.
Myth: “Chitragupta Puja is the Kayastha version of Bhai Dooj”
Fact: Two observances sharing a tithi. They are kept in the same afternoon in many households and they have different deities, different narratives and different objects. The same thing happens twice more in this week - Kali Puja with Naraka Chaturdashi, Bestu Varas with Govardhan Puja.
Myth: “He records only what you do wrong”
Fact: The office described in the texts is a record of deeds. Not a charge sheet, and not a tally kept against anyone - the point of it is that it is complete.
Yama could not hold it all, and said so, and what came out of Brahma’s meditation was not a judge but a clerk with a pen. The day does not ask anyone to improve their entry. It sets the pens down on a cloth, cleans them, and sits in front of them for an afternoon, which is a strange and rather exact way to mark the fact that everything is being written.
